Summer Undergraduate Research Experiences (SURE - 223)
Mission

The mission of the Summer Undergraduate Research Experiences (SURE) is to spread the culture of research and to provide more opportunities for conducting research at the undergraduate level

Objectives

The objectives of SURE are to:

  1. Provide students with exposure to advanced research techniques and tools
  2. Provide students with beyond classroom skills
  3. Attract students to KFUPM graduate programs
  4. Help students identify their passion to decide on their future career path
  5. Enhance students' research capabilities through early engagement
Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the SURE program, the undergraduate student must satisfy the following conditions:

  1. Should be fully dedicated to the SURE program (Not Allowed to Register in any other summer courses). An agreement shall be entered into between the URO and the student in which the student obligates himself to not join any other program in parallel with SURE223 (a copy of the agreement is shared with the student’s advisor).
  2. To be an active KFUPM student during the summer semester 223
  3. The current cumulative GPA should be 3 or above (out of 4)
  4. Should have completed at least 30 credit hours (Sophomore and above)
  5. Join SURE at least one semester before graduation (should be graduating in term 231 or later)

It is very important for the students to realize that SURE is a competitive program; hence, meeting the above eligibility criteria does not guarantee joining the program. All applications will be evaluated and decisions will be made based on evaluations and availability of necessary resources.

Application

Applicants should submit the following documents:

  1. A recent copy of the transcript
  2. CV (Optional)
  3. Application form (Online)
  4. Statement of Research Interest

All documents should be submitted online before 4:00 pm -  Tuesday 2nd of May 2023.

Duartion and venue
  1. Student joining the SURE program will be involved in research for 8 consecutive weeks (40 hours/week) during the summer session 223.
  2. SURE program will be hosted on KFUPM campus
Learning outcomes

Through SURE program, the student should be able to:

  1. Articulate clear research questions or problems
  2. Demonstrate the research methodologies he learned
  3. Demonstrate progress and achievements of his research
  4. Explain his research to others through research presentations / posters
Accomplishments & Assessment

At the end of the SURE program,

  1. Participant should submit a final report to the Undergraduate Research Office (URO) that includes:
    • Abstract
    • Background
    • Methodology
    • Results & Discussion
    • Conclusions
  2. Participant should prepare a poster/presentation on his research for the participation in the SURE Exhibit Day at the end of summer 223.
Incentives for Students

SURE provides the following incentives for the students:

  1. A 2000-SAR stipend per month (in addition to the regular stipend)
  2. On campus housing
  3. Subsidized meals at KFUPM Cafeteria
  4. Social activities
  5. SURE can be considered as an equivalent to the summer training
  6. Priority in conference attendance
  7. Program certificate
